Day one on Quest 2: does living-room horror work without colour passthrough?
HAUNTED lists Quest 2 as supported. What black-and-white passthrough means for the wall arms, the witch and the room scan — and whether it's worth buying.

Quick verdict: yes, HAUNTED: Are You Alone? runs on Quest 2, according to the Meta Horizon Store. The store lists Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 and Quest 3S. The difference isn’t in the list, it’s in the window onto the real world: the Quest 2 shows your room in black and white. For Quest 2 owners who like horror, it’s still a buy. If you’re already thinking about an upgrade, you’ll see the game on Quest 3 or 3S the way it was meant to be seen.
The starting point
HAUNTED is a mixed-reality game. You see your real room through the cameras’ passthrough, and the game puts its monsters into it. Arms break out of your walls, a hole opens in your floor, black blood spatters onto your real walls.
The Quest 2 can do passthrough, but not the same way newer models can. Its camera feed is black and white and comparatively coarse. Quest 3 and Quest 3S show the room in colour. That’s common knowledge and not a feature of HAUNTED — it’s the hardware.
We’re not quoting figures like frame rates or latency here. The studio hasn’t published any, and we don’t invent them.
What shipped, on Quest 2 too
The content is the same on every listed headset:
- Story with prologue, seven chapters, finale and epilogue, 25 to 35 minutes according to the studio.
- Three arcade modes: Grave Rush, Arm Cutter, Skull Hunt.
- Two secret chapters and New Game+.
- Hands or Touch controllers as input.
- Spatial audio from real positions in the room.
The store doesn’t split the content by headset. So if you’re on Quest 2, you’re not buying the “small version”.
What black and white means for the scares
The wall arms. In Chapter II, ghost hands hammer against your walls from the inside, then a long arm breaks through. In a grey room, the game’s coloured effects are likely to stand out more against the background. What’s lost is the illusion that it’s your coloured wallpaper tearing open.
The witch. In Chapter I, the witch flickers in the furthest corner like a broken video signal. Here it’s less about colour than about sound and timing. The game reads your gaze direction from head orientation, not eye tracking. The Quest 2 has no eye tracking, but it doesn’t need it here.
The blood. Black blood on real walls and red blood in the secret chapters live off colour. On the Quest 2, the interplay with the grey room feels different. Whether that’s weaker or simply stranger is a matter of taste.
The dark chapters. Chapters IV and V get very dark. The game supplies its own light here: torch, muzzle flash, moonlight through a hole in the wall. That carries on any headset.
The room scan
HAUNTED uses the room from Quest Space Setup. On launch, all scanned rooms are listed, and Scan a new room opens the setup. On newer headsets, the Quest maps the room largely automatically. On the Quest 2, you generally trace walls and furniture by hand in Space Setup.
That has consequences. The more accurately the walls are placed, the better the arms break out where your wall actually is. So take your time with the scan. According to the studio, any room size works.
What’s missing
- Colour passthrough. That’s a hardware limit of the Quest 2.
- Manufacturer figures for Quest 2 performance. There are no official details on differences between the headsets.
- User reviews. On 10 October 2026, the store page still had none.
One tip: Hide my room
In the settings there’s Hide my room. Instead of passthrough, you see a virtual padded cell built on your real walls. All the scares still work. It’s meant for streamers. For Quest 2 players it can be an alternative if they don’t like the grey camera feed. Whether the cell works better than the real room in grey is something you’ll have to try for yourself.
What to watch next
It’ll be interesting to see whether later updates change anything about Quest 2 support. There’s no announcement on that. We’ll report as soon as the store lists something new.
Buy, wait or skip? (Quest 2)
Buy if you have a Quest 2, you’re an adult and you want to try horror in your own room. At £3.99 (UK store, as of 10 October 2026), the risk is small. Wait if you’re upgrading to Quest 3 or 3S in the next few weeks anyway. Then you’ll see the blood on your walls in colour. Skip if the PEGI 18 warning applies to you. Launch Score
8.5 out of 10 for the Quest 2 experience, as the editors’ opinion. Same content, same mechanics, same price. The deduction against newer headsets comes purely from the grey window onto the real world.
