Onboarding as a countdown: from the first fox to a finished study plan

Seven steps to a study plan: we walk through LingFit's onboarding like a launch sequence and show what each question actually does.

Verdict in brief: LingFit’s onboarding is longer than many rivals’, but it works. Every question feeds into a study plan the app builds live in front of you. At the end you get minutes per day, starting level, streak goal and a focus area. If you want to reach the first lesson fast, you’ll have to tap through a few screens. If you want to know what it’s all for, you get an answer. Our line: see it through, don’t skip it.

We’re describing the flow in the current build. In the App Store that’s version 2.9, dated 4 October 2026.

T-minus 7: Fitty Fox says hello

The first screen belongs to the mascot. Fitty Fox is a fully 3D-rendered fox with fur. He greets you; nothing else happens here. That sets the app’s tone: playful, but not childish.

T-minus 6: Languages and level

Now comes the most important decision. You pick your own language and your target language. The base languages are English, German, French and Spanish. There are 42 directions in total. Spanish speakers get six target languages. The other three base languages have twelve each.

You also state your current level. That determines where the plan starts. The course runs from A1 to B2.

Tip: Be honest here. A level set too high makes the first lessons frustrating. You can add more languages later, each with its own progress.

T-minus 5: Challenges, motivation, age, target date

At first glance this block looks like a questionnaire. But it has consequences.

  • Challenges and motivation shape the plan’s focus.
  • The target date gives the plan a timeframe.
  • The age bracket is the most interesting bit. LingFit adjusts its humour accordingly. Under 35, the app sounds cheekier — ‘You beast.’ after a correct answer. From 35 it calms down — ‘Well played.’ There are over 200 such reaction lines.

If you’ve ever been annoyed by overly loud learning apps, choose carefully here.

T-minus 4: Time, time of day, streak goal

You set how many minutes a day you have and when you want to study. Then you set a streak goal. These details determine the daily workload in the plan.

Tip: Start small. A goal you can hit on busy days lasts longer than an ambitious one that breaks on day three.

T-minus 3: The plan builds itself live

This is the moment you tapped for. LingFit visibly assembles your personal study plan and then shows it: minutes per day, starting level, streak goal and focus area. That makes the earlier questions make sense. You see what your answers turned into.

T-minus 2: Message, preview, reminders

A personal message from the founder and a preview of the app follow. Then LingFit asks whether reminders should be allowed.

Tip: Allow reminders here if you’re serious about the streak goal. They’re configurable later. If you decline now, you’ll have to re-enable them in your system settings.

T-minus 1: Sign-in

Sign-in runs through Apple on iOS and Google on Android. You don’t need your own password. After that you’re in. Every new account also gets a free credit for a custom AI pack.

What’s missing

  • No visible shortcut. If you just want a quick look, you still have to answer the questions.
  • No email sign-in in the flow described. Apple or Google are mandatory.
  • The level is self-assessed. In the flow described, you state your current level yourself. If you’re unsure, pick lower.

Where you can move faster

The questions are short. If you know three things beforehand, you’ll barely need to think: target language, honest level, realistic minutes per day. Everything else takes seconds. The study plan isn’t a contract. It only sets the direction for the first few days.

What to watch next

  • Whether the plan noticeably follows the focus you gave.
  • Whether the age bracket’s humour is still pleasant after a week.
  • How well the streak goal fits your actual week. More on that in our week-one report.

Launch Score and recommendation

Our Launch Score for the onboarding: 8.7 out of 10, the editors’ opinion. It isn’t the shortest, but it’s one of the best-justified. The age question with consequences for tone is a small, clever idea.

Buy, wait or skip? See it through. Five honest answers pay off in the first lessons. If you want to read up beforehand, the language list is on the official LingFit page.
