Halloween buying guide 2026: which Quest horror game for which evening?

Short and solo, with an audience, or long: which Quest horror game suits which Halloween evening. HAUNTED alongside real alternatives, fairly compared.

The short verdict: the best horror game for Halloween depends less on the game than on the evening. A quick solo scare needs something different from a living-room session with an audience, or a long night in a strange world. So this buying guide sorts by type of evening. HAUNTED: Are You Alone? is fresh in the store and gets its place — but not every place. All details on other games are kept general. Check availability and price in the store before you buy.

First, the basic question: mixed reality or full VR?

Quest horror splits roughly into two camps.

  • Mixed reality: you see your real room, and the horror happens inside it. The scare is close, because it takes place in your home.
  • Full VR: you stand in a built world — a house, a pizzeria, a crime scene. The scare is alien, but the world is bigger.

Neither is better. But the choice decides how the evening feels.

Evening type 1: short and solo

Situation: 30 to 45 minutes, lights off, nobody watching.

Our pick: HAUNTED: Are You Alone? The story runs about 25 to 35 minutes, according to the studio. Prologue, seven chapters, finale, epilogue. Each chapter brings a new mechanic: looking away from the witch, arms out of the wall, a doll that copies your movements, skulls in the torchlight. Your room is the level.

What you need to know: in the en-gb store it costs £3.99 (as of 10 October 2026). It’s PEGI 18 and English-only. You play standing or moving around the room, not seated.

Alternative: if you’d rather have a built world, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted offers short, self-contained scenarios. That fits a short evening too.

Evening type 2: with an audience in the living room

Situation: friends on the sofa, one in the headset, everyone else laughing.

Our pick: HAUNTED, with caveats. The scares are physical. You crawl, duck, swing an axe, grab with bare hands. For onlookers that’s visible and entertaining. With Hide my room, your living room is replaced by a virtual padded cell in the stream.

The caveats: HAUNTED is a single-player game. You take turns. And everyone in the headset has to be over 18 and take the warnings seriously.

Alternative: Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted also works for taking turns, because the scenarios are short and the scares clearly readable. The series is well known, and many guests already know the characters.

Evening type 3: long and deep

Situation: two hours or more, one story to sink into.

Our pick: not HAUNTED. Time to be honest: HAUNTED is a short story plus an endless arcade. If you want a long investigation, you’re better off elsewhere.

Alternative: The Exorcist: Legion VR. Episodic VR horror in which you follow occult cases. The episode structure suits an evening of playing several chapters back to back. The style is slower and denser than living-room horror.

Evening type 4: the night after

Situation: the story is done, but you still want half an hour of play.

Our pick: HAUNTED’s arcade modes. Grave Rush, Arm Cutter and Skull Hunt are endless waves with coins, a shop and top-5 high scores. Less horror, more action. A good closer for a Halloween week.

Alternative in the MR camp: Hauntify Mixed Reality. An MR ghost-hunting game that was in early access at the time of MIXED’s reporting. Check the current state in the store.

Who none of this suits

Horror isn’t a game for everyone. HAUNTED warns at every launch about sudden loud noises, flickering lights, gore and intense scares. According to the studio it isn’t for children, pregnant people, or anyone with epilepsy, heart conditions or anxiety disorders. The other titles have their own age ratings and warnings. Please read them in the store.

Before 31 October it’s worth checking the store for discounted titles or newly released horror games. Prices change, and so does availability. HAUNTED is in the Meta Horizon Store.

Buy, wait or skip? Short evening or living-room session: buy HAUNTED now. Long story night: go for a longer VR tale. Easily spooked, or guests under 18: do Halloween without the horror headset.
