Dark Mornings in November: The Launch Window for a Winter Routine

After the clocks go back, the dark season begins. Here's how to start November with short morning sessions and the MindIsland daily meditation.

A single window with a thin crescent moon against a dark sky

At the end of October the clocks go back in the UK. After that it gets dark earlier in the evening, and through November the mornings get later and later too. Plenty of routines tip over right about now. The alarm goes off in the dark, and the motivation isn’t there. Our verdict: November isn’t a bad time to start a short morning meditation — it’s a good one, as long as you keep it small. MindIsland fits, because a fresh session is waiting every morning. One important clarification up front: we’re not promising anything against the winter blues. If you feel low for weeks on end, talk to a doctor.

Why November specifically

New routines need a trigger. New Year is the classic one. November has an advantage: it’s quieter. No New Year pressure, no packed gyms, no grand resolutions. Start now and by January you’ve already got a few weeks of practice behind you.

The dark mornings also reshape the day anyway. When the morning is being rearranged regardless, a small habit is easier to slot in.

What MindIsland brings to the morning

  • Daily meditation. A new meditation is generated every morning. Nothing to type in. Ideal for half-awake moments.
  • 3 minutes. The shortest length is enough to get going.
  • Postures. The guidance adapts to chair, floor, lying down or standing.
  • Breath opener. Every session starts with four seconds in, a short pause, six seconds out.
  • Streak. The counter shows how many days in a row you’ve been at it.

The four-week plan for November

Week 1: Just three minutes. Straight after getting up, the daily meditation, 3 minutes, sitting on the edge of the bed or on a chair. No typing, no deciding. The only goal is to open the app in the morning.

Week 2: Add light. Switch on a lamp before the session. Lie there in the dark and you’ll drift back off easily. The “chair” posture helps you stay awake.

Week 3: Your own prompt. On two or three days, type in your own sentence instead of the daily meditation. Something like: “Dark morning, can’t face the day, to-do list is full.” The app takes that in before it settles into the calm.

Week 4: Pick your length. Test whether 5 minutes suits you better. If 3 minutes is enough, stick with it. A short routine you keep beats a long one you abandon.

What’s missing

  • No light alarm, no wake-up function. MindIsland has no alarms and no sleep tracking.
  • No guarantee against the winter lows. The app is not a medical device according to the store, and it offers no therapy.
  • Paid after the first session. One meditation is free, after that you need Premium. Premium Monthly cost $12.99 in the US App Store on 10 October 2026.
  • English only. English-language meditations are what’s documented.

Practical tips for dark mornings

  1. Keep the phone away from your pillow. If you have to get up for it, you’re more likely to open the app sitting down.
  2. Batch your notifications. On iPhone via the scheduled summary, on Android via a do-not-disturb schedule. That way only the reminder you want gets through in the morning.
  3. Prepare offline. The last ten meditations are stored. If your signal is poor in the morning, generate a session the night before.
  4. Don’t overvalue the streak. A missed morning isn’t back to zero. Just carry on the next day.

When the morning falls apart anyway

Some mornings don’t work. Overslept, sick child, missed bus. Then the rule is: 3 minutes standing at the bus stop beats nothing at all. The standing guidance works with your eyes open. If you can’t manage even that, move the session to your lunch break. The daily meditation stays available all day.

What we’re watching next

  • Whether the library gets seasonal sessions for the dark season.
  • Whether the app documents its own settings for reminder times.

Verdict

November is an underrated launch window. Three minutes, daily meditation, light on: that’s all you need to start. If you want to give it a go, you’ll find the app at mindisland.app. Start now if you’re after a small morning habit. Waiting until January isn’t worth it.
