What the store doesn't tell you: Laser Thief on the first evening, honestly assessed

Polished marketing images, sparse details: what to look out for on the Laser Thief store page, and what only becomes clear in the headset.

A shop window with a single VR headset under a spotlight

Store pages sell. That’s their job, and there’s nothing wrong with it. But judge Laser Thief on the Meta Store images alone and you get a skewed picture. The screenshots are polished marketing shots, and they show older content. Our view: the most important information on the store page isn’t in the pictures, it’s in the small print. And some of it you only find out in the headset.

The problem with the images

The images on the store page look like snapshots from a living room: a player among yellow lasers, someone on a carpet under green beams. But they’re staged promotional shots, not direct captures from the headset.

More importantly: they show earlier game content. Some scenes, such as crawling under beams, don’t match the game the studio describes today. There, crawling isn’t needed. The lowest required posture is a deep crouch.

This is not unusual for store pages. Trailers and images often lag behind updates. You just ought to know it before building up expectations.

What to look at instead

The dry fields say more than the pictures. On 10 October 2026 the UK listing showed:

Field Store listing What it means
Player mode Room-scale You really walk through the room
Interaction Single user No multiplayer, no online
Recommended space at least 3 × 3 m That’s meant seriously
Comfort Comfortable for some Not equally pleasant for everyone
Age rating PEGI 12 Suitable for teenagers
Internet not required Runs offline
Advertising no in-app ads No interruptions
Headsets Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, Quest 3S According to the listing
Price £7.99 As of 10 October 2026

These are the lines that decide a good or bad first evening. Above all the space.

What only becomes clear in the headset

The room makes the difference. Laser Thief adapts levels to real room shapes. Beams end at your own walls, L-shaped rooms work. That looks different in every living room, and no store image can show it.

The colours are a language. According to the studio there are eight laser types with fixed rules. Red is always deadly, magenta blinks, cyan only triggers on fast movement, amber only becomes live once you have the loot. In a still image you just see coloured lines. In the game you read the room like a puzzle.

Failing is cheap. A hit sends you back to the start platform, the loot back to its pedestal. In Story and Free Mode you can’t lose for good. That sounds like a small thing, but it changes the whole feel.

The body counts, the feet don’t. Head, torso, arms and hands can touch beams. Legs and feet aren’t tracked. You step over low beams. No image explains that.

What the store covers too briefly

  • Space. “3 × 3 m recommended” is there, but not that small rooms get thinned out and that there’s a quick-play area without a scan.
  • Movement. Crouching, bending, big steps. You should know that beforehand, especially with back or knee problems.
  • Scope. According to the studio there are 120 story levels across five worlds plus four more modes. That gets easily lost in the short description.

What we’d like to see

A set of images that shows the current content. Less polished, more honest: a real room, a platform, a cyan beam. For buyers on the first evening that would be more helpful than any glossy scene.

Until then: read the images as mood, not as a promise. Treat the table above as the real basis for buying.

Our assessment

Laser Thief is a better game than its store page explains. That’s an unusual sentence, but it’s true here. The out-and-back mechanic, the colour rules and the room adaptation are the real strengths. None of them comes across in a screenshot.

Buy now, wait or skip? Buy if the facts table fits: free space, standing and moving are no problem. Wait if you only want to decide on images and you’re unsure. In that case, read our other day-one reports first. The store page remains the source for price and headsets.
